How to Support Your Child’s Behavior at School

As we are midway through the school year and as a parent, I want to ensure that my child develops positive behavior habits that set him up for success. When he started receiving conduct marks for things like not listening the first time or being slightly disruptive, I knew it was important to understand what was causing these challenges and how to best support his growth. Here’s how to navigate this if you're ever in this situation as a parent trying to support your child effectively both in class and raising them up.

Step 1: Take a Breath First

The first thing I had to do was just take a breath. As parents, we juggle so much—not just in our personal lives but also with everything happening around the world. When something happens at school, especially when it feels unclear as to what is happening, my first reaction is frustration. But before reacting, I take a moment, breathe, and approach the situation with a clear mind.

Step 2: Helping Your Child at Home

After calming down and understanding the situation, the next step is to help your child navigate their behavior effectively.

  • Discuss Their Conduct Openly

Sit down with your child and have a calm conversation about what happened. Ask open-ended questions to get their side of the story. This helps you understand if the marks are justified or if they feel unfairly treated. Instead of jumping to conclusions, use this as a learning moment.

  • Create a Behavior Tracking Chart

Kids love visuals, and a behavior tracking system helps them take ownership of their actions. Log daily whether they listened the first time, followed directions, and stayed focused in class. Celebrate small wins and progress rather than just focusing on mistakes. To add fun to it, I like to add a sticker to reward great behavior.

  • Use Positive Reinforcement

Instead of just focusing on punishment, reward good behavior. Praise them when they listen the first time, follow directions, or improve their focus. Small incentives, like extra playtime or a fun activity, can be strong motivators to keep them on track.

  • Practice Listening & Following Directions

Reinforce listening skills at home by turning it into a game. Give simple directions and challenge them to follow them the first time. Over time, this helps build a habit of immediate response and attentiveness.

If there isn’t any improvement, I usually take it to the next step below.

Step 3: Communicating with the School

  1. Request a Meeting with the Teacher

Open communication with your child’s teacher is essential. This week, I scheduled a meeting with my son’s teacher to gain a clearer understanding of the situation. When preparing for a meeting like this, think about specific questions that relate to your child’s experiences. Ask about the school’s behavior policies, how conduct marks are assigned, and whether the challenges are unique to your child or part of a broader classroom issue.

I approach these conversations as a collaborative effort to support my child, rather than just seeking answers.

  2. Ask for Documentation & School Policies

If you don't have it already, request a copy of the behavior policy to ensure the school is following clear guidelines. This helps understand what’s expected and if there is details you need to know about in discipline.

  3. Ensure Fair Treatment

If I suspect that my child is being unfairly disciplined compared to others, I would gather evidence by talking to other parents, requesting class observations, or discussing with school administrators.

Our kids behavior is an opportunity for growth, both for them and for you as their advocate. By reinforcing positive behaviors at home, you can help them develop the skills needed to succeed. Open dialogue with teachers, setting clear expectations, and tracking progress are key strategies in guiding them toward better conduct.

Stay the Course—This Ain’t the Time to be Shakened

Peace, blessings, and love to you all. As the world shifts and uncertainty looms with the new administration, it’s easy to feel discouraged, frustrated, or even fearful. Many are questioning what’s next, but one thing remains unchanged—The Most High is still in control.

This is not the time to shrink back, get distracted, or move in fear. This is the time to stay the course, trust in The Most High like never before, and use discernment in every step you take.

The Call to Stay Focused

We are living in times where deception is at an all-time high, and the enemy’s tactics are subtle yet strategic. This is why discernment is no longer optional—it’s a necessity. Now, more than ever, you must:

  • Guard your mind and spirit. Be mindful of the media you consume, the conversations you entertain, and the people you allow to influence you. (Proverbs 4:23 – "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.")
  • Strengthen your prayer life. Seek wisdom and clarity from Yah daily. He will guide you and keep you from falling into deception. (James 1:5 – "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.")
  • Stand firm in your convictions. The pressure to conform will increase, but you are called to be set apart. (Romans 12:2 – "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.")
  • Prepare and position yourself. This is not the time to be idle. Equip yourself spiritually, financially, and mentally for what’s ahead. (Matthew 25:1-13 – The Parable of the Ten Virgins reminds us to stay ready, for we do not know the hour when God’s plans will unfold.)

Now is the Time for Unshakable Faith

Faith is more than just belief—it’s action. To stay the course, you must:

Stay grounded in the Word. Scripture is your foundation.

Surround yourself with like-minded believers. Community is key.

Move with wisdom, not emotion. Feelings can deceive, but God’s truth remains steady.

This is not a time to play. This is a time to be vigilant, intentional, and unwavering in your walk.

Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Performance: If You Missed the Message, You Missed the Mark

Peace, blessings, and love to you all. Seeing so many negative comments about the Super Bowl performance is truly eye-opening—it’s a reminder of what the Most High revealed to us long ago. Racism is real, whether people choose to acknowledge it or not. Kendrick Lamar didn’t just put on a show; he delivered a message. And if you didn’t catch it, it simply wasn’t meant for you.

In a world where Black artistry is often watered down for mainstream consumption, Kendrick did what he does best: showed up, unapologetic, and delivered a message for us, to us. From the song choices to the symbolism, every detail of his set spoke volumes about Black identity, resilience, and power. While some might’ve seen “just a rap performance,” those who understood felt the weight of the moment.

A Performance Rooted in Blackness

Kendrick has never been one to cater to the masses. His music has always been layered—meant for those who are willing to listen beyond the beat.

At the Super Bowl, he didn’t compromise. He gave us:
Unfiltered Black storytelling
A visual representation of resilience
A performance rooted in OUR culture—not for approval, but for impact

Some people watched it and kept scrolling. Others saw a cultural statement, a message, and a moment of Black artistry standing firm on one of the world’s biggest stages.

If You Know, You Know.

Too often, mainstream media tries to erase or soften our impact. But Kendrick didn’t just entertain—he made a statement. And if you didn’t feel it, you weren’t the audience he was speaking to so if you missed the message, you missed the mark.
