Back to New Orleans: Food, Memories & Real Moments
Growing up in New Orleans shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand until I left. From the neighborhoods I ran through as a kid to the family traditions that still ground me, my journey has been one of growth, change, and deep realization. There’s a rhythm to life in New Orleans that never really leaves you. The warmth. The resilience. The way people show up for one another. It’s not just culture, it’s in your DNA. But if I’m being real, it wasn’t always easy.
I grew up watching strength in action. I saw what it looked like to make something out of nothing. Creativity and faith stretched what we had into something meaningful. That mindset followed me all the way to Houston and into the woman I am today.
What to Eat in New Orleans (My Personal Favorites)
You can’t come to New Orleans and not eat. That’s just not how this works. Every bite feels like memory. Every plate feels like home. If you’re planning a trip or just want to experience the city the right way, here are a few spots you have to try and what I personally recommend:
Toast Gretna
This is a must for brunch.Get the pancake balls. No questions asked. They’re soft, sweet, and just… different in the best way. It’s one of those dishes you don’t realize you needed until you try it.
Heard Dat Kitchen
This spot right here? Flavor packed. Get the catfish and red beans. It’s giving comfort, it’s giving soul, it’s giving “somebody grandma in the back made this.” You will feel it.
Loretta’s Authentic Pralines
Now THIS is where you go when you want something sweet but memorable. Get the praline beignets. Not regular. Praline. Trust me. It’s a whole experience. More Than Food, It’s the Feeling. Yes, the food hits every time. But what really got me this trip?
The conversations. The laughter. The unspoken understanding between people who just get it. Sitting around those tables reminded me how deeply rooted I still am in my family and culture. No matter where I go, that foundation is always there.
What This Trip Taught Me
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is this: Growth doesn’t always look like big milestones. Sometimes it’s quieter than that. Sometimes it’s going back to a place that once overwhelmed you and realizing you’re standing in it differently now. With more clarity. More confidence.More peace.
A Reminder You Might Need
This trip reminded me that even though I’m not exactly where I want to be, I am so far from where I started. And that alone is worth celebrating.
If you’re in a season of growth, or even just trying to hold it together, take a moment and reflect. You don’t need a huge breakthrough to be proud of your progress. Maybe your “walk down memory lane” looks different. Maybe it’s a conversation. A journal entry. Or a quiet moment to yourself. Wherever you are, honor it.
